14 years to the month after the Muriwai Volunteer Lifeguard Service first proposed alterations and expanding of its clubhouse to accomodate a burgeoning membership and a desire for improved amenities, a start has been made on a new clubhouse and community centre. Earlier today the ‘groundbreaking’ occurred, with earthmoving taking place to provide access around the construction site – proof that the dream is rapidly becoming a reality!

Final fundraising of $550,000 commences

The Muriwai Lifeguard Service Amenities Trust is moving directly in to its final fundraising drive, targetting the $550,000 needed to allow the new facilities to be constructed in full, and debt free. The announcement by Matua Wines on 3 April that it will contribute $30,000 to match $30,000 donated by Nobilo Wines means the trust has secured the essential $4,650,000 to construct the essential elements of the new facility. Final fit-out of the upstairs lounge and bunkrooms will be deferred until a further $306,000 has been sourced, and the competition gear store will also be deferred pending receipt of the $200,000 needed to pay for its construction. Construction of the core lifesaving operations, education, community hall and meeting facilities is assured. With construction expected to take nine months trustees are highly confident this provides sufficient time to find the final funding.

The Trusts Community Foundation announces $550,000 donation

The Trusts Community Foundation has announced a further donation of $550,000 toward the new surf life saving club and community centre at Muriwai, in a move designed to ensure construction of the new facilities can start in May 2012. The Trusts Community Foundation’s total support of the project is now a whopping $1,040,000 meaning they are now the largest cash funder of the project.

Fundraising reaches $4,541,000

Local fundraising is gathering pace as the Northwest communities respond to the challenge of raising the final $500,000 required to complete the new surf club and community centre. Matua Wines and Nobilo Wines are the latest businesses to demonstrate outstanding social responsibility – each announcing a donation of $30,000. This follows hard on the heels of the Waitangi Day Music Festival that raised an amazing $15,000, and news that the Muriwai Sports Fishing Club will contribute a further $20,000.

Funding agreemenst and site licenses were signed off with Auckland council on 2 May. Naylor Love have taken possession of the site and will be establishing their site offices from 13 May. Construction will commence ASAP. Its happening….
